Level of Prosthetics and Orthotics in Nigeria

It is supposed to be a profession that exists as long as people with physical disablilities, amputees and all other clients that requires the service of this department exists.

The founding members of the profession in Nigeria are long out of it due to aging and death but they forgot to leave replacements early enough hence a young generation of professionals are just coming up to save the profession from extinction in the country.

This move led to the training of six (6) Orthopaedic technologists spread across the three (3) orthopaedic hospitals in Nigeria. Although the spread is not even with four of them at a particular centre while the remaining two centres have one each. Out of the six technologists, two returned to pursue their Bachelor of Science degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics of which i happen to be one of those two.

My point is this, for a country with 150million people and the number of prothetics and orthotics professionals available to serve a disability population of almost 15million, there is need for more people to be trained both locally as well as internationally.

The government has succeeded in establishing a Prosthetics and Orthotics School in Lagos named Federal College of Orthopaedic Technology (FECOT) which is a plus to them; the only thing i see about it now is that the college should be independent and autonomous so that it can follow international standards that would lead to its being recognised internationally.

Students are to be well grounded in the practical field at this level of education. and the tutors well trained for such tasks.
If this can be achieved, we can be looking at a new dawn for Prosthetics and Orthotics in Nigeria.

  1. Hello Oke, I was wondering if you can tell me how to contact prosthetic providers in Nigeria. I was contacted by someone in Nigeria looking for prosthetic limbs and I am trying to help them. In particular it is the NAEI organization in Cross River that contacted me. I presume these are low income patients that can't afford to pay much. Can you point me to anyone who is providing prosthetic services?

  5. I have read some comments about the history of Prosthetic and Orthotic in Nigeria that needs to be modified for accuracy of content. The first person known to have studied Prosthetic in Nigeria was Chief M.A.O Kuti. He studied at the Roampton orthopedic school in England and came back to Nigeria to establish the prosthetic department at the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, lagos, which we all know today. He was followed by the Duo of Mr. Ladino and Chief Ogundele . The next group were Mr. Edward Adeokun, Mr. Ademola, Mr. Sanya Somolu, Mr. Ajala, Major Oluwole, All these gentlemen were trained at Roampton and had obtained a Diploma Certificate for their training.
I, GBOLAHAN SASONA is the first to train at the New York University at the Bachelor degree level. I wish to also mention Mr. Akintunde Akintitan, who trained at Margee University in Canada with a Diploma in Prosthetic and Orthotics. Mr. Kola Opatade went to Glasgow, where he Obtained his HND diploma,in Prosthetic and later had his Master in biomechanics from the same school.Mr Famakinwa also trained in Roampton,England, and the Current department head at the National orthopedic hospital, Lagos, Mrs Aluko was trained in France. There are the younger ones in the field now which includes Oluwole OKE. I am not aware of anybody currently enrolled in a prosthetic program at any school or University.
